Durban Olympics 2020 – Durban gets support right at the top to make their bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games!

There has been much excitement amongst the Durban locals this week after the Mayor of Durban, Obed Mlaba, formerly announced that Durban plans to bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. The Olympic Games have never been on African soil, so Durban’s win will be as historic as South Africa’s win of World Cup 2010. South Africa’s president Jacob Zuma has also extended his support for the Durban Olympics in 2020. South Africa has shown the world it can host a major world event with it’s outstanding hosting of the FIFA World Cup, and it now sets its sites on hosting more world tournaments and events.

South Africa’s Olympic body, SASCOC, has now announced that it will formerly oversee an Olympic bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, with Durban being considered the favourite city to win the Olympic bid.

Even the president of FIFA, Sepp Blatter, who hailed the recent FIFA World Cup in South Africa as an outstanding success, has backed the Olympic bid and has said that if a country can host the World Cup, it can easily host the Olympic Games.

The World Cup has proven to be an excellent advertisement for Durban’s ability to host the Olympic Games, as all the infrastructure needed to host such a massive tournament is already in place for the Olympics in 2020, and will just need a bit of polishing up! The Major of Durban, Obed Mlaba, has said that feasibility studies are to be conducted, and has already spoken of where the Olympic Village in 2020 will be as well as the Aqua Centre and Equestrian facilities, so it is all full steam ahead for the Durban Olympic bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. This August (8th-24th) sees Beijing, China, hosting the games of the X X I X Olympiad. Below is listed a potted history of the Olympic games from 1960 to date including a few interesting facts about each games.

Rome 1960

Rome had been chosen to stage the 1908 Games, but the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in southern Italy had intervened. It was some 52 years later that the Games finally arrived in the Italian capital. The Rome games were broadcast by television to all European countries and were watched by millions. However, the competitions themselves were overshadowed by the rivalry between the US and the USSR. In the final medal table the USSR finished ahead of the US by 43 to 34 gold medals.

Olympic Highlights

Running barefoot, Ethiopian athlete Abebe Bikila did not go unnoticed when he entered the marathon. He refused to be daunted by the condescending remarks and left all his opponents behind to cross the finishing line victorious, near Constantine’s triumphal arch.

Aged 20, Wilma Rudolph became the first American woman to win three gold athletics medals in one Olympiad: in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. She achieved this extraordinary feat despite suffering from a string of childhood illnesses and recovering from a deformed leg caused by polio.

Cassius Marcellus Clay, later known as Muhammed Ali first came to international prominence by winning the light-heavyweight gold medal. He would later turn professional and embark on a phenomenal career.

Tokyo 1964

For the first time, the Olympic Games were hosted in Asia, Japan invested heavily in the most modern sports facilities as well as in improving the infrastructure of a city containing over 10 million people.

The extraordinary architectural design of the swimming stadium led to it being described as a “cathedral of sports”. Other outstanding new buildings included the judo hall, which was modelled on the architectural style of traditional Japanese temples.

The opening ceremony offered a glimpse into how record-breaking the competition would be, when teams from 93 nations (10 more than participated in Rome) paraded into the Meiji Stadium. However, the high standards set by athletes at the Tokyo Games led some critics to warn about exaggerated expectations for the future development of the Olympic disciplines.

Australian swimmer Dawn Fraser won her third successive gold medal in the 100m freestyle. She was the first woman swimmer to win eight medals (four gold and four silver) – over three Olympics.

Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina added six more medals to her tally, becoming the first woman to win nine Olympic gold medals.

Deszo Gyarmati won gold with the Hungarian water polo team, thus achieving the (then) unique feat of winning medals at five successive Olympic Games

Mexico City 1968

Mexico City’s high altitude – almost 2,240m (7,350ft) above sea level dominated much of the pre-Games discussion: the consensus being that athletes from lowland countries would be at a disadvantage. However several weeks of high-altitude training enhanced the performances of many of these athletes.

There were violent riots in the run-up to the Games, following complaints about the exorbitant amounts of money being invested in Olympic facilities in contrast to Mexico’s own social problems.

Controversy also arose over South Africa’s participation at these Games and the IOC withdrew its invitation under pressure. Doping controls were introduced for the first time and a Swedish athlete was disqualified for having too much alcohol in his bloodstream.

Olympic Highlights

American Bob Beamon was the favourite in the long jump but he exceeded all expectations. His jump of 8.90m beat the world record by 0.55m.

Czech gymnast Vera Caslavska won four gold and two silver medals. These victories were given extra significance by beating the Soviet gymnasts shortly after Soviet tanks had invaded her homeland.

American Debbie Meyer became the first woman swimmer to win three individual gold medals at one Olympic Games.

Munich 1972

The 1972 Munich Games were the largest yet, setting records in all categories, with 195 events and 7,134 athletes from 121 nations. The Games were supposed to celebrate peace, and for the first 10 days all went well.

But in the early morning of 5 September, eight Palestinian terrorists broke into the Olympic village, killed two members of the Israeli team, and took nine more hostage. In the ensuing battle, all nine Israeli hostages were killed, along with five of the terrorists, and one policeman.

The Olympics were suspended and a memorial service was held in the main stadium. In defiance of the terrorists, the International Olympic Committee ordered the competitions to resume after a pause of 34 hours. All other details about the Munich Games paled in significance.

Olympic Highlights

Finnish distance runner Lasse Viren fell halfway through the 10,000m final, but still set a new world record to win the first of his four career gold medals.

The media star of the Munich Games was the petite Soviet gymnast Olga Korbut, whose three gold medals helped establish Soviet dominance in the female gymnastics events and captured the attention of fans worldwide.

Montreal 1976

The 1976 Montreal Games were marred by the boycott of 22 African nations protesting the fact that despite the New Zealand rugby team touring South Africa in defiance of international sporting sanctions, New Zealand was still allowed to compete. To compound the situation, the host nation suffered an unusually long winter, industrial disputes, and a lack of funds, which made it impossible to finish work on the Olympic facilities in time for the opening ceremony.

However, the performances of the athletes did not suffer from the political and national disputes. Despite the problems, the Games were well organized and, following the 1972 terrorist attack in Munich, security was tight.

Olympic Highlights

Nadia Comaneci was the star of the Games. She achieved her first perfect 10 on the uneven parallel bars, and the judges awarded her the maximum mark seven times.

With his victory in platform diving, Italian Klaus Dibiasi became the first Olympic diver to win three successive gold medals, and to win medals in four Olympic Games.

The US and East Germany dominated the swimming events. Only Great Britain’s David Wilkie and the Soviet Union’s Marina Koshevaya (both winning their 200m finals in record times) upset the monopoly.

Moscow 1980

As a result of the US-led boycott in protest at the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, only 80 countries were represented at the Moscow Games. : Notable absentees included Japan, West Germany, and the US.

Western countries have frequently referred to the Moscow Games as being of a low standard, and have raised doubts about the sporting value of the results and medals. Nonetheless, although not of the highest calibre, the Moscow Games were hardly sub-standard: 36 world records, 39 European records, and 73 Olympic records bore testimony to the high level of talent and competition on display.

Olympic Highlights

Soviet swimmer Vladimir Salnikov won three gold medals: in the 400m and 1,500m freestyle, and 4x200m relay. He was also the first to swim 1,500m in a time of less than 15 minutes.

British middle-distance runners Steve Ovett and Sebastian Coe faced each other in two memorable duels. In the 800m, Ovett won the gold medal just ahead of his compatriot. Six days later, a determined Coe redeemed himself in the 1,500m, taking gold while Ovett could only manage bronze.

By winning the decathlon, Great Britain’s Daley Thompson became “king of the athletes”, beating home crowd favourite Yuri Kutsenko into second place.

Los Angeles 1984

Although a revenge boycott led by the Soviet Union depleted the field in certain sports, a record 140 nations took part in the first privately funded tournament in Olympic history.

More than 30 sponsors together contributed more than 0 million, while other companies funded the building of new sports facilities, in a deal that allowed them to advertise on the admission tickets.

The ABC television network paid 5 million for the exclusive television rights, thereby ensuring that most events started in the evenings during prime television time in the US. With these vast amounts of money involved, many critics held the view that what had once been a festival of amateur sport was now a purely commercial spectacle.

Olympic Highlights

American diver Greg Louganis remained unbeaten from the 3m springboard as well as from the 10m platform.

Sebastian Coe became the first repeat winner of the men’s 1,500m.

In the women’s 400m hurdles, Nawal El Moutawakel led from start to finish, becoming the first Moroccan athlete to win a gold medal.

British decathlete gold medallist Daley Thompson finished just one point off the world record.

i know the trials are every four years

when the track runners arent running in the olympics… do they run in any other meets?

also, how old do you have to be to try out for track events?

Athletes have other Games and Champs to enter, winter and high altitude training to attend, out of competition drug tests, Financial endorsement obligations, National and local club meetings, family commitments, most work at other jobs as well, only the elite are full time professionals.

You should be young to get into atletics, only distance runners can get away with entering the sport later in life.

Vancouver, in British Columbia, Canada will host the 21st Winter Olympic Games from February 12th to 28th, 2010. Followed by the Paralympic Winter Games from March 12th to 21st, 2010. The events will take place in and around Vancouver, as well as in the resort town of Whistler, some 100km to the north. There are several characteristics of Vancouver which make it stand out from all previous Winter Olympic venues. Firstly, it will be the most populous city ever to host the Winter Olympics. Secondly, it will almost certainly be the warmest, with the average temperature in February of 4.8 degrees Celsius. Thirdly, some of the venues will be at, or near, sea level, something which is very rare for a Winter Olympic venue. Unusual though these characteristics may be, they are actually all good news for visitors to the 2010 Winter Olympics as the large city means there are more local facilities and a wider range of hotels, it won`t be quite so cold and some of the venues aren`t so hard to get too!

The first thing to make sure of when planning your trip to the Olympics is that you have the correct documentation. All international visitors require a passport to obtain entry to the country. Visitors from most countries also need a visa, although if you are a citizen of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Mexico, Japan, the Republic of Korea, or Australia, you are exempt and do not require a visa. Vancouver International Airport has lots of flights to and from many airports. It may be possible to get a cheaper ticket by getting an indirect flight and having to change planes. This will take longer and will be more hassle, but if you are on a budget it may well be worth hunting around for the best deal. Unfortunately, as Canada is such a vast country the option of flying to another major international airport in Canada and then driving to Vancouver is not particularly appealing. Although you are more likely to be able to get a good value ticket to another Canadian airport around the time of the Olympics, you will be faced with a very long drive. For example, from the nearest major city, Calgary, it would take around 10-11 hours to reach Vancouver. One of our best suggestions is to look at flying into Seatac International Airport just south of Seattle,Washington in the United States. Especially because we’ve found some very appealing accommodations south of the border with direct public transportation available.

Once you are in Vancouver the fact that there is no spectator parking at any of the Olympic venues means that public transport is just about your only way to get around. Fortunately, as travel on the TransLink and BC Transit Systems (basically all public transport) is free if you have a valid ticket for an Olympic event on that day, there will be no additional cost for travelling around. This includes both travelling to Olympic venues and any other sightseeing you can squeeze into the day; so be sure to make the most of your free allowance. For those days when you don`t have tickets for events you will have to purchase travel tickets to get around. Alternatively, if you are planning a long stay, you can get a limited edition Olympic souvenir pass, which is valid for the entire month of February. Getting out to the Olympic venues at Whistler and Cypress Mountain is an altogether more expensive affair, which requires advanced preparation. You must purchase a ticket for the Olympic Bus Network, which will be valid for a return trip from a designated point in Vancouver to the destination that the event is at. You must book in advance and it is particularly wise to book before the 4th of January because all the fares double on this day!

As Vancouver and the surrounding area is a popular holiday destination even without the Olympics, there are many hotels to choose from at all budget levels. The key to getting the best deal is to book well in advance. If you are on a tight budget, bear in mind that the further afield you look from the Olympic venues the better deal you will find. This is probably the best value option, especially as public transport is free if you have Olympic tickets. As you are visiting during the Olympics it is obvious that you won`t get as much for your money in and around Vancouver because the demand will be so unusually high. However, there are other places you can stay where you will get a lot more from your accommodation than just a room to stay in during the Olympics.

Vancouver is very close to the border between the USA and Canada. This makes staying in the US a good option to look for cheap holidays, especially if you stay near a direct train route to Vancouver. Looking in Washington State north of Seattle there are particularly attractive accommodations on Camano Island. This is an ideal location, as it is within easy reach of the main train station at Stanwood, with direct trains to Vancouver. Camano Island`s Eagles Nest is a particularly fine example of luxury accommodation you would have to pay an absolute fortune for in Vancouver, but you could have at a reasonable price on Camano Island. It is perfect for a large family, or group, as it sleeps ten people and includes such luxuries as a hot-tub, games room, sports court, and multiple fireplaces, and wonderful views looking out over the water towards the snowcapped mountains to make your stay truly special. For anyone who wants to do more on their holiday than just go to the Olympics the area offers many activities, such as boating, kayaking, hiking, and golfing. In addition, it is well known for its wildlife and is very popular with bird-watchers. It really is an excellent place to stay, particularly if you want the Olympics to be something you visit whilst on holiday as opposed to the sole reason for your trip. It’s perfect if you would like to be able to spend some quality time relaxing away from the inevitable crowds in Vancouver.

The 2010 Winter Olympics, officially the XXI Olympic Winter Games or the 21st Winter Olympics, is a major international multi-sport event held on February 12–28, 2010, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with some events held in the resort town of Whistler, British Columbia and in the Vancouver suburbs of Richmond, West Vancouver and the University Endowment Lands. Both the Olympic and Paralympic Games are being organized by the Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC). The 2010 Winter Olympics will be the third Olympics hosted by Canada, and the first by the province of British Columbia. Previously, Canada was home to the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec and the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta. Following Olympic tradition, then Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan received the Olympic flag during the closing ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. The flag was raised on February 28, 2006, in a special ceremony, and was on display at Vancouver City Hall until the Olympic opening ceremony. The event was officially opened by Governor General Michaëlle Jean.[3]

The Canadian Olympic Association chose Vancouver as the Canadian candidate city over Calgary, which sought to re-host the games and Quebec City, which had lost the 2002 Olympic bid in 1995. On the first round of voting on November 21, 1998, Vancouver-Whistler had 26 votes, Quebec City with 25 and Calgary 21. On December 3, 1998, the second and final round of voting occurred between the two leading contenders, which saw Vancouver win with 40 votes compared to Quebec City’s 32. The win allowed Vancouver to prepare its bid and begin lobbying efforts internationally.[citation needed] After the bid bribing scandal that took place with the 2002 Winter Olympics at Salt Lake City (which saw Quebec City asking for compensation (C million) for their failed 2002 bid),[4] 1999 saw many of the rules around the bidding process change. The IOC created the Evaluation Commission which was appointed on October 24, 2002. Prior to the bidding for the 2008 Summer Olympics, often host cities would fly members of the IOC to their city where they toured the city and were provided with gifts from the city. The lack of oversight and transparency often led to allegations of money for votes.

Afterward, changes brought forth by the IOC bidding rules were tightened, and more focused on technical aspects of candidate cities. The team analysed the candidate city features and provided its input back to the IOC. The bid books from the three candidate cities were submitted in January 2003 and inspections occurred before May 2003, when the final report was submitted.[citation needed] Vancouver won the bidding process to host the Olympics by a vote of the International Olympic Committee on July 2, 2003, at the 115th IOC Session held in Prague, Czech Republic. The result was announced by IOC President Jacques Rogge.[5] Vancouver faced two other finalists shortlisted that same February: PyeongChang, South Korea, and Salzburg, Austria. Pyeongchang had the most votes of the three cities in the first round of voting, in which Salzburg was eliminated. In the run-off, all but two of the members who had voted for Salzburg voted for Vancouver. It was the closest vote by the IOC since Sydney, Australia beat Beijing for the 2000 Summer Olympics by 2 votes. Vancouver’s victory came almost 2 years after Toronto’s 2008 Summer Olympic bid was defeated by Beijing in a landslide vote. The British Columbia government also indicated it would pay for a 0 million upgrade of the Sea-to-Sky Highway to accommodate increased traffic between Vancouver and Whistler. The Vancouver Olympic Committee (VANOC) spent .6 million on upgrading facilities at Cypress Mountain, which will host the freestyle (aerials, moguls, ski cross) and snowboarding events. The athletes’ villages in Whistler and Vancouver are now complete, as are the main media centre in Coal Harbour and its Whistler counterpart.[6] With the opening in February 2009 of the -million Vancouver Olympic/Paralympic Centre at Hillcrest Park which will host curling, every sports venue for the 2010 games was completed on time and at least one year prior to the games.[7][8]
